I love Emma Cook’s designs: feminine, playful, and undeniably pretty, they have just the right amount of whimsy, offset with a good dash of wit. Releasing videos as a collection preview isn’t new, and has become increasingly popular among forward-thinking and media-savvy brands over the past few seasons – Kenzo and Honor NYC have both recently produced stellar examples – but this purposely lo-fi short perfectly captures the Cook aesthetic. Maybe I’m just a sucker for a dinosaur jumper (I’m totally just a sucker for a dinosaur jumper), but this genuinely feels like an extension of the brand, rather than a PR ploy:

J W Anderson has just released pictures of his second collection in collaboration with Topshop, and I’m on it like a car bonnet. I really liked the first collection, and have acquired a couple of items from it (via eBay, of course; one has to watch the pennies), so I’ve been waiting for this drop with very bated breath.
First impression: I don’t like it as much as I did the debut collection. That is, of course, just my opinion, and is based entirely on the fact that both the silhouettes and colours will not be flattering on me. I’m petite all over, but with a very curvy outline, so long, straight lines just don’t translate. Also, I’m choosing to overlook the fact that I will look like the walking dead in the buttermilk shade, because that pleated skirt is going to be coming home with me. I WILL MAKE IT WORK.
Having said that, I can see that this is a strong collection. I think it’s a little more coherent than the previous one that had a whole lot of motifs, prints, colours and shapes going on at once. This drop is much more refined; they’ve lost the novelty items, and have expanded on the big sellers of the previous season – namely the motif sweaters and shirts. That dodo sweater is going to fly. The addition of footwear was also a savvy move. The loafers fit with Anderson’s gender blending agenda, while still being commercially viable. If you want to up the fashion ante, buy the platform versions.
Standout items for me (and ones that will be going on my shopping list) are the lilac bomber jacket and the aforementioned pleated circle skirt. Patent buttermilk? Why the fuck not. Essentially, there is plenty here to satisfy both fashion forward and more cautious shoppers. I can see most items selling well, but, I have to admit, I feel it’s less creative than his previous offering, and that, for me, is a clincher.
