Rhett Price and Josh Knowles – Subway Violinists

I was going to make some quip about violins making this song acceptable listening, but I’m not going to pretend that I didn’t play the original on repeat whilst I was unpacking.

Also: Underground>Subway.

Had a throwback Tuesday today at work and I was feeling it; My boss and I both hit the dance/shop floor when this song came on. Twelve years (Christ, that makes me feel old) after its release, and I still know all the words.

UPDATE: Did some digging (5 minutes on Wikipedia), and apparently the original bandmates have reformed as Mutya Keisha Siobhan or MKS. Yay or nay?

Nelly Furtado

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Nelly. In a world of bland, auto-tuned teenagers churning out drivel, she’s making pop music with a bit of fucking oomph.

Yes, you’ll be hearing this blaring out of the radio all summer, but it’s fun and catchy, so I’m hoping it’s not going to be the Umbrella of 2012 (I still can’t with that song).

Also, can we talk about this video? How incredible are those dancers? I love that she’s incorporated Native American dancers, but hasn’t strayed down the cultural appropriation path by styling herself out as one. A great summer song, and a really positive example of Native American imagery.

Lisa Mitchell

Today’s Tuesday Tune comes from the wonderfully wispy-voiced Lisa Mitchell. A runner-up on Australia’s Got Talent/X Factor/Pop Idol shenanigans a fair few years back (I’ve made a real effort with my researching here, haven’t I ), she’s still relatively unknown over here; a shame really considering her musical stylings are far more interesting than you’re average pop singer.

This song (and particularly it’s video) always perks me up and gets me bouncing along. It also inspired in me a love of girly dresses with school shoes, which, 3 years after first seeing the video, sees no sign of abating.

Lisa Mitchell, Neopolitan Dreams. Why do you not recognise Neopolitan, WordPress spellcheck?
